Five Organizations Offering Prep Services

Those in the LGBTQ+ community who were seeking free PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis,) treatment since the closure of SETAC can get that treatment at the Outpatient Center for the Care of AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (CAPASITS).

CAPASITS, located at Aldama 1013, Villas del Real, in Puerto Vallarta, near the Regional Hospital, provides PrEP free of charge to anyone – national or temporary or permanent resident.

“We request that the corresponding documentation be present: Proof of non-affiliation or entitlement (IMSS/ISSSTE), copy of CURP and/or INE, and in the case of foreigners, we request a copy of their temporary or permanent residence if they have it. Otherwise, a copy of their passport (official photo ID), proof of address and previous PrEP prescription,” explained Dr. Susy Raviela, treating physician at CAPASITS.

She emphasized that if you have received PrEP before – even from SETAC – please come with a copy of your prescription.  They are open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“None of the services we offer have a cost. They are completely free, including PrEP,” Raviela explained. 

CAPASITS opened in Puerto Vallarta in 2006, and is a joint effort between the Mexican federal HIV ministry, the Jalisco state department of health, and the Puerto Vallarta municipal government.

SETAC continues to remain closed after most of its staff left, claiming non-payment of their salaries and abuse from the director. You can read more about that here and here. 

Five Options to receive PrEP (Some are free, some low cost and others have a cost):

1. A new non-profit is in the process of being formed by some former SETAC physicians and employees, and is seeing patients at ThrIVe IV and MedSpa. If you were a previous patient at SETAC you can schedule an appointment via WhatsApp number 322 128 67 93 and or their contact form http://surl.li/oytjp to follow up with your appointments. New enrollees can also use the contact form to be signed up for new registrations. Current patients will be asked for a $300 MXN monthly optional donation.

3. PrEP Vallarta – Offers PrEP and other testing and medical services for a cost. Available at RENEW MedSpa or Puerto Vallarta, Jal., Puerto Vallarta. You can read more here and here.
