(From a press release issued on September 9, 2024)
The Mexican LGBTTTIQ+ Coalition, of which Movement for Equality (MOVii) is a part, demands that the 43 opposition senators attend and vote against the judicial reform in the next plenary session of the Senate. This reform could compromise the independence of the Judiciary and seriously affect the rights of vulnerable populations, including the LGBTTTIQ+ community. It is crucial that the reform be reviewed with a human rights approach and that access to tools such as protection be protected. Justice must be equitable and free from political interference!
The people and organizations that are members of the Mexican LGBTTTIQ+ Coalition demand that the 43 opposition senators attend and vote against the judicial reform in the next session of the Senate plenary session that is convened for this purpose. Your presence is crucial to stop this reform that endangers the independence of the Judiciary.
Context of Judicial Reform:
On September 4, 2024, the Chamber of Deputies approved a judicial reform that must now be discussed in the Senate. The Mexican LGBTTTIQ+ Coalition expresses its deep concern about the impacts of this reform, which could seriously affect vulnerable populations such as people of sexual diversity, women, indigenous people and people with disabilities.
Critical Points:
1. Politicization of the Judicial System:
– The reform proposes that judges and magistrates be elected by popular vote, which could compromise the impartiality of their decisions, especially in cases that involve vulnerable groups.
2. Reduction of Ministers and Duration of Office:
– The reform proposes reducing the number of Supreme Court ministers and shortening their period of service, which would centralize power and could compromise the stability of the Judiciary.
3. Access to Justice:
– The barriers for rural and indigenous populations, already considerable,
They could be aggravated by the centralization proposed in the reform, affecting their access to equitable justice.
4. Impact on Sexual Diversity:
– The reform could restrict access to mechanisms such as protection,
crucial tool to protect the rights of the LGBTTTIQ+ community, thus affecting their ability to defend rights such as equal marriage and the right to identity.
5. Gender Violence:
– Women victims of gender violence, already revictimized by the judicial system, could face more barriers if judges are chosen under political pressure, perpetuating gender stereotypes in rulings.
Call to the Senate:
We request that judicial reform be reviewed with a human rights approach and a gender perspective, ensuring that discrimination is not perpetuated and acquired rights are protected. It is essential to maintain access to tools such as protection and promote equity and inclusion in the judicial system.
Justice must remain accessible, equitable and free of political interference.

Sincerely, Mexican Coalition LGBTTTIQ+
