(From a press release issued by MOVii on September 8, 2024).
As the Mexican Equality Movement (MOVii), today we address our community with a deep sense of responsibility and pride.
We want to recognize the courage, resistance and informed conscience of those who, from Puerto Vallarta, have decided to fight for the defense of our rights and justice in this country .
We congratulate ourselves as exemplary citizens for being an active part of this resistance that seeks to move Mexico forward, not backward. We congratulate ourselves for being united in the cause of equality and the defense of our democratic institutions. We congratulate each person who demonstrated today in the Plaza de Armas, ourselves, for sustaining this resistance in such crucial moments for the public life of our country.
Puerto Vallarta, a city that bears the name of the great jurist Ignacio L. Vallarta, deserves justice and respect. His legacy of law and judicial protection is under threat by reform proposals that seek to dismantle the justice system, one of the fundamental pillars of human rights in Mexico.
The jewel of the Mexican legal system, the amparo trial, is a conquest that we cannot allow to be taken away. If the Supreme Court loses its autonomy and independence, who will defend us? People in vulnerable situations have found in the Judiciary a crucial ally in the conquest of their rights. Thanks to the Supreme Court, LGBTQ+ people, among other communities, have obtained the legal recognition that was denied to us for so long.
Therefore, we firmly say NO to the judicial reform that would put these historical conquests at risk and we join the demand for accountability. Bruno Blancas, congressman for the 5th District, headquartered in Puerto Vallarta, owes this city an explanation of his vote in favor of this reform. We demand that Bruno Blancas show his face, that he explain why he decided to vote in favor of a reform that endangers the rights of all.
Finally, from this city, from this port, on this hot September 8, we reiterate our struggle: Vallarta, listen, this is your struggle. For the defense of our rights, for the future of our institutions, for equality and justice, we will continue firm and united.
Thank you very much.
