So You Think You Can RISE, presented by PVRPV, is an annual talent show and fundraiser for RISE (Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza), a privately funded 50-bed children’s shelter. RISE exists thanks to the generosity of others – it was founded in 2001 by Padre Luis and Madre Mari, and since then it has provided a safe and loving environment to many children.
Los Muertos Brewing is one of the many companies that is providing support for the talent show and shelter – and does so in more ways than one.
Conner & Stephanie Watts, owners of Los Muertos Brewing, started providing pizza parties to the children at RISE several years ago. Kids love pizza.
“RISE is an excellent organization providing support to children coming from less than ideal circumstances,” Conner Watts said. “They have a dedicated team of support staff and volunteers that consistently go above & beyond to ensure the children’s safety and opportunity for growth & development.”
Stephanie Watts said that Los Muertos is always looking for ways to give back to the community.
One of those ways of giving back is supporting the So You Think You Can RISE talent show as a Gold Sponsor. Los Muertos is one of four gold sponsors for the event, with the others including Lix, Let’s Pho, and Century 21 Riviera Realty.
“We do our best to give back to the community in as many ways as we can,” she said. “Kids & pizza is clearly a great match, so when we met a volunteer involved in RISE, of course we wanted to do our part to support the kids.”
Los Muertos Brewing Company opened on Nov. 2, 2012 (Dia De Los Muertos), and was the first artisanal brewery in the bay, a pioneer bringing craft beer to Puerto Vallarta.
Conner and his wife Stephanie were looking for a warmer climate and moved from the U.S. to Puerto Vallarta in 2010. After a year, they developed the plan to open a restaurant—and spent another year building their new craft beer and pizza hub.
Conner had previously owned a restaurant in Park City, Utah, that featured New York-style pizza. His challenge in Puerto Vallarta was to find the right ingredients (especially challenging in a humid environment – read more about that here from a 2018 story).
But craft beer was one of their top goals – it was a part of the market in Puerto Vallarta that no one had paid much attention to – and came with its own set of challenges.
Conner has been home brewing since he was eighteen years old at the University of Colorado. He wanted to turn what was a hobby into something more.
He overcame many challenges before opening and brewing his first batch to sell. Challenges not only in the brewing process (which included controlling the fermentation temperatures), to clearing local legal hurdles to even having a special stainless steel barrel system made.
He spent a summer working at Coopersmith Pub and Brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado in order to fine tune his beer making skills.
“We are proud to have helped pioneer bringing craft beer to the area,” he said. “We have a satellite location in the Versalles area which now has a full dining room and offers the same menu as the downtown location. We recently opened a new restaurant, El Granero, just one block north of our original Los Muertos Brewing location, which offers an elevated twist on classic pub fare. Takeout and delivery are available from all locations.”
