[Editor’s Note: You can donate to Hotel Mercurio’s GoFundMe Account here. See below for how much money has been raised.]
Mexican singer Alberto Cuevas and his talented friends have organized a special benefit show for Saturday, July 13th, to raise funds for the former employees of Hotel Mercurio.
Cuevas (known as El Diamante) will be joined by Pianist Salvatore Rodriguez, Angelica Estrella/ Angie Star, Armando Chakám, Wendy Warhol, Diva Daniela, and Alonso Sax. Cuevas told O&APV that there would also be some “some surprise guest artists to make appearances.”
The event, taking place at the Cuale Cultural Center Auditorium on Isla Cuale Island starting at 7 p.m., aims to provide financial support to these 25 workers who had dedicated their time to the hotel. Cover charge at the door is $200 pesos, and that, as well as any tips will all go to the former employees.
A total of about $2 million pesos is required to fully liquidate the 25 former employees under Mexican labor law. Severance pay in Mexico is based on the employee’s salary’s and longevity of employment, and includes payroll and social security taxes on the severance pay amount. Many of the Mercurio staff have up to 2 decades (20 years) of employment. At Mercurio, employees rarely resigned former owner Paul Crist told O&APV.
Just over half that of the $2 million has been raised from donations, fundraising events and sale of Mercurio assets. (All funds received to date have been paid out as partial payments to Mercurio staff).
“My friends! Don’t miss this show!. It will be awesome and you will help me support my Mercurio staff. I’ve managed to pay more than half of their finiquitos but I’m determined to give them all every peso obligated by the labor law. The total, with taxes and IMSS and everything, is a little more than $2 million pesos,” said former Hotel Mercurio Owner Paul Crist.
Several fundraisers have already been held, and a GoFundMe account was established. Crist provided Out & About PV with the following accounting information on what has been donated and raised, with a total of $442,532 Pesos raised through fundraisers.
GoFundMe: $381,990 Pesos

He has also been selling equipment, his liquor licenses and in the process of selling his 2022 car, which will get funds required to a bit over the halfway mark.
“All funds received to date have been paid out as partial payments to Mercurio staff,” he said. “It is amazing how the community has come together to help provide this amount of financial support and I am so grateful and thankful for everything.”
