For half a century, Salvatore Rodríguez has made his living from a piano bench, working his way from a teenager in Tepic, Nayarit, to one of Puerto Vallarta’s most recognizable musicians. On Aug. 29, he’s marking that milestone with an elegant black-and-white dinner show at Café des Artistes Puerto Vallarta.

Rodríguez began playing piano in 1978 and has spent more than three decades performing in Puerto Vallarta, including 24 years as resident pianist at Garbo Piano Bar. Along the way, he’s accompanied major Mexican artists including Juan Gabriel, Armando Manzanero, Lila Downs, Francisco Céspedes, María Conchita Alonso, Silvia Pinal and Rocío Dúrcal, along with more recent collaborations with Storm Large of Pink Martini. He’s also performed internationally, including at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Medellín, Colombia, and founded the UNIVA Orchestra in Vallarta.

“For me personally, a very important date is approaching in my professional life: 50 years as a pianist,” Rodríguez said. “We will celebrate with an elegant black and white dinner show, featuring my piano accompanied by a soprano and seven of the best tenors at the most beautiful and exclusive restaurant in Mexico, here in Puerto Vallarta: Café des Artistes Puerto Vallarta.”

Rodríguez, who has also been honored with the Amado Nervo Award and named “Pianist of the Bicentennial,” is bringing that half-century of performing to a single formal evening.

Fifty years after he first sat down at a piano in Tepic, Rodríguez’s anniversary show adds another formal night to Puerto Vallarta’s cultural calendar — and gives longtime fans one more chance to hear the man some still call “The Liberace of Mexico” mark half a century behind the keys.

The Aug. 29 show pairs Rodríguez’s piano with a soprano and seven tenors, billed as some of the best in the region, for a formal dinner performance at Café des Artistes. The evening begins at 7 p.m. and calls for formal black-and-white attire. Seating is limited, and organizers are encouraging early reservations.

Beyond his stage work, Rodríguez has built a broader presence in Puerto Vallarta’s cultural life. He teaches piano to students of all levels, works with area schools, colleges and universities, and hosts the cultural radio program “En el Café con Salvatore.” Last year, he closed out a milestone season with the “Salvatore and His Friends” tour, the recital “Mis Joyas Prestadas” (“My Borrowed Jewels”) and a concert titled “Gracias a la Vida” (“Thanks to Life”).
