Puerto Vallarta’s business community has been dealing with plenty of questions lately, including concerns about businesses closing and what the coming months could bring for the local economy.

Those questions are behind an upcoming discussion at La Catrina Cantina, where local residents, business owners and others will have a chance to hear from two professionals who follow economic and tourism trends.

La Catrina Cantina will host “What’s Next? Economy & Tourism: Outlook for Puerto Vallarta” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. The event is open to everyone, and attendees can reserve a spot.

Juan Alvarado Gonzalez, owner of La Catrina Cantina, said the idea came from what he has been seeing in the local business community.

“Business closing and just general unrest in the business community,” Alvarado Gonzalez said, describing some of the concerns that prompted the event.

He said the goal is to bring in professionals who can offer some perspective on what may happen in the months ahead rather than simply speculate about the current situation.

The discussion will look at economic trends, tourism forecasts and other factors that could affect Puerto Vallarta.

One of the featured speakers is Thomas A. Bernes, a distinguished fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation, or CIGI. Bernes has more than 40 years of experience in international finance and economic policy, including senior positions with the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the Canadian government.

Bernes has served as executive director of CIGI and director of the IMF’s Independent Evaluation Office. He also served as Canada’s executive director at the IMF and held senior positions involving international trade and finance.

Joining him will be Jamie Alexander, director of business development and a real estate professional with PVRPV, a Puerto Vallarta vacation rental and property management company.

Alexander works with rental and real estate data and follows trends in the local vacation-rental market. PVRPV manages several hundred rental properties in the Puerto Vallarta area, giving the company a broad look at activity in the market.

One of the questions Alexander is expected to address is what current rental activity can say about tourism in the coming months, including how many visitors may be coming to the area.

For a community that depends heavily on tourism, those numbers can be important for businesses trying to plan ahead.

Alvarado Gonzalez said he hopes the event will give people a better understanding of what is happening in Puerto Vallarta and what they might expect in the near future.

The discussion is open to business owners, residents, tourism professionals, property owners and anyone interested in the local economy and tourism industry.
