He baked his own (really good) bread and grew pineapples and tomatoes on his rooftop. He loved wine, good food, great conversations, and wonderful museums.
After retiring from the Philadelphia Museum of Art (voted one of the 30th best in the US) in 2017, Richard moved to Puerto Vallarta. It didn’t take long for him to become deeply involved with Vallarta’s vibrant art community. He curated at OPC (Oficina de Proyectos Culturales) on Juarez Street, literally down the hill from his house.
In 2023, he began working with Nathalie Herling at Arte Vallarta Museo, curating some of the finest exhibits in that museum’s short history. He brought New Yorkers to town, adding a decidedly international flavor to the Vallarta art scene.
Dove Bradshaw’s exhibit was memorable, and a piece of hers remains on site, changing with the seasons and the years. Another notable exhibition was New York architect David Jones’ precise ”Line and Color.”
Richard always made sure I had an invitation to attend Opening Nights at the Museo, and he would provide me with so much text, photos, and information beforehand that I felt like I knew the artists before the doors opened to the public.
I had the pleasure of attending a couple of small cocktail parties at his gorgeous home a couple of blocks away from me. The people he invited were always interesting and as kind as he was.
Richard took every opportunity on Facebook to wish the people in his life happiness at Christmas and New Year’s, Thanksgiving, and Easter.
My fondest memory of time spent with Richard was the first Gay Mixer at the Cuale Condo in October, 2024, sponsored by Out & About Puerto Vallarta magazine. I am not gay, but he insisted I would love every minute of it, and he was so right. I have missed only two or three in the past two years!
So, Richard, we will say adios for now. I loved your conversations and will miss your fire! Your loaves of bread and sweet kitty. Your beautiful house and the extraordinary artists you introduced me to. Rest in Peace, amigo; I know our paths will cross again.
