The Puerto Vallarta LGBTQ+ community, the ACT LGBT Business Association and the Vallarta Pride organization participated in the New York City Pride Parade, which this year celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Heritage of Pride and the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising that gave rise to the wave of activism of the Collective in the fight against discrimination.

NYC Pride is one of the most important festivals in the world due to its magnitude, activism and history in the search for a better future free of discrimination where everyone has the same rights before the law. It carries out a series of events to inspire, educate, commemorate and celebrate the diversity of the community. Under the motto of “Reflect, Empower & Unite” Mexico was present through the organization and coordination of the Consulate General of Mexico in New York City.

The parade took place at noon on Sunday, June 30, and included 55 floats, more than 75,000 participants, and brought together more than 2.5 million spectators on the iconic Fifth Avenue. The color, folklore, and diversity of Mexico was evident in the trajinera, which included the delegation that had Puerto Vallarta as a guest destination, as well as members of the Mexican LGBTQ+ community in the Big Apple. This contingent was led by the Consul General of Mexico in New York, Jorge Islas López, and the Consulate team coordinated by Miguel Heredia of Economic Affairs.

Vallarta Pride celebrated its 12th Anniversary this year and has become the most important festival of beach destinations in Mexico, recognized by the national and international LGBTQ community, which brings together the largest number of foreign visitors to pride festivals in Mexico. In addition, Puerto Vallarta has several community events such as the festivals of Bears and other groups, as well as having its own Gayborhood in the Romantic zone.

“We feel very grateful and proud to be part of this historic event in our country, infinitely honored by the invitation of the Consul General of Mexico in New York, Jorge Islas López” commented Javier Jiménez, President of Vallarta Pride. “It is also the result of the local work of businessmen, activists and members of the community in Puerto Vallarta to make our destination a paradise and a safe space for all” added Jiménez.

“Finally, the success of Puerto Vallarta would not be possible without the work of local authorities over time to provide facilities to the local community, expatriates and visitors of what our city has to offer to the group, without forgetting the support and push in the promotion and visibility of the segment that we have felt supported and supported by the Secretary of Tourism of the State of Jalisco, as well as the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust,” concluded the President of Vallarta Pride.

“We proudly celebrate the achievements that Vallarta Pride has achieved not only locally but also internationally with the arrival of tourists to the destination and making strategic alliances that give visibility to Puerto Vallarta as the friendliest city in the world” shared Luis Villaseñor, General Director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust

This joint work has been the result of the activities of Promotion of the destination through the Tourism Trust, which at the Gala event created the bases to promote Puerto Vallarta in the Big Apple with the support of the Mexican Consulate in New York and with the support of the Municipality to generate twinning between cities and also events such as the Pride festivals of both destinations recognized by the community and international tourists.

As part of the actions to strengthen the ties of the festivals, last May Puerto Vallarta welcomed Mr. Yoshua Woods, Director of Operations of NYC Pride and Miguel Heredia, Head of Economic Affairs of the Consulate General of Mexico in New York, with a packed agenda, to meet and experience firsthand the Vallarta Pride festival as well as the offer of services that our destination has for the LGBTQ+ community, which is well represented by the ACT LGBT Business Association.

Finally, with the visit of the Consul General of Mexico in New York on the anniversary of the city, the gratitude of Puerto Vallarta was expressed for the support in promoting the destination and giving visibility to the LGBTQ community of our Port and the importance of Pink Tourism for this beach tourist destination, the most important in Mexico and Latin America for the community.

Vallarta Pride celebrates this historic event that reaffirms Puerto Vallarta as a friendly, inclusive, safe and prosperous destination, for the contribution of LGBTQ+ tourism to the city that generates an important economic spillover and creates safe spaces for all.
