Documentary to Highlight Pioneering Activist Nancy Cárdenas Will Soon Be Shown in Puerto Vallarta

In 1973 while being interviewed on national televisión, Nancy Cárdenas suddenly and unexpectedly came out of the closet.

“Soy lesbiana” she said, and just like that, the TV image was cut off the air . In a split second she became known all through México as “la primera lesbiana” ( the first lesbian). She then went to face the media, answer questions and exposed México’s oppression and repression against the then known only as “Homosexuales”.

She single handedly organized the first march and protests for gay rights in Mexico, and worked for decades for equal rights for everyone.

She put her degree from UNAM to work and went on to direct theater plays that included The Boys from the Band and The bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant. These were among some of the most famous plays she directed, which attracted big names in show business who wanted to work with her and attracted all kinds of audiences.

“They shot bullets  and I shot art” she is known for having said. Soon the documentary Dear Nancy, directed by Olivia Peregrino, will be shown here in Puerto Vallarta, where she most certainly deserves to be known.
