The vibrant, larger-than-life letters spelling out “Puerto Vallarta” are as synonymous with the city as its stunning beaches and warm hospitality. These iconic symbols, beloved by locals and tourists alike, have undergone a meticulous restoration to reclaim their original splendor.
Years of exposure to the elements had taken a toll on the beloved letters, fading their once-bold colors. Along with a comprehensive revitalization of the famed Malecon, a dedicated team led by Marcela Lepe Quiroz, daughter of renowned artist Manuel Lepe Macedo, undertook the task of restoring the letters to their former glory.
Manuel Lepe Macedo, a prolific artist (he did more than 2,500 pieces of art) whose work helped shape Puerto Vallarta’s identity, originally designed and painted the letters. His distinctive style, characterized by vibrant colors and bold strokes, became an instant local treasure.Unfortunately, a previous repainting had altered the original design, diminishing the letters’ iconic appeal.
Marcela Lepe Quiroz, with the assistance of her nephew Luis Lepe, embarked on a labor of love to restore her father’s masterpiece. The project involved not only repainting the letters to match the original colorful style of her father, but also incorporating anti-graffiti coating to protect them for years to come. Additionally, Marcela added her own artistic touch to the backs of the letters, creating a unique blend of old and new.
The Vallartense Institute of Culture oversaw the restoration project, ensuring its alignment with the city’s cultural heritage.
