Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco’s tourism crown jewel, is experiencing a good year for tourism. Air travel is leading the surge, with a 2.6% increase in passengers arriving in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. This translates to an additional 96,500 visitors by air this year.
The growth is even more impressive for international travelers. International arrivals by air have spiked 7.8%, with nearly 177,000 more international visitors choosing Puerto Vallarta in 2024 so far.
The good news extends beyond the airport. Cruise ship arrivals are strong, with 94 ships docking in the first half of the year, bringing 285,625 passengers. Bus travel has also seen a modest 3% increase in ridership.
Looking ahead, summer is expected to be another win for Puerto Vallarta. Projections indicate at least a 3% growth in tourism, with hotel occupancy averaging 78%, rising to 80-85% on weekends.
“We’re heavily promoting Puerto Vallarta domestically,” says Luis Villaseñor, director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust. “Summer is prime time for domestic visitors, but we’re also focused on international markets. New air routes from Alaska Airlines and increased frequencies by American Airlines promise to bring even more international guests.”
With a strong showing in the first half of 2024 and exciting developments in air travel, Puerto Vallarta appears poised for a record-breaking year.
