Puerto Vallarta is preparing for a major upgrade. The airport is undergoing a significant expansion, with the new Terminal 2 scheduled to open its doors in 2026, with a gradual move starting in 2025.
Raúl Revuelta Musalem, general director of Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), gave an update recently on the project, which will have the capacity to move more than 4.5 million passengers a year. His comments came while speaking at another event at the airport in Guadalajara.
“We are working on it, and if anyone who passes around sees it, you can already see the complete structure,” he said. “Next year it (the structure) will be finished and we will start the gradual move. Launching a new terminal does not happen from one day to the next – it is a very gradual process, with the airlines, so I would say that 100 percent operational the terminal will be in two years (2026). “
The new terminal will also be the first Zero Energy airport terminal in Latin America. This will be achieved within 7.5 years through several strategies, which include: the use of solar panels on the roof of the building, which will lower energy consumption by 40% compared to other airports with the same characteristics; and efficient water management through the reuse of 100% of the gray, black and blue water generated inside and outside the terminal, which will reduce water consumption by 35%; among other elements.
The expansion of the airport began in late 2022. The new terminal covers more than 68,000 square meters, which means a growth of 150 percent. Puerto Vallarta International Airport has 49 routes; 13 domestic and 36 international. When the project was announced, it was expected to open at the end of 2024.
