On the evening of 13 May 2024, I had the pleasure of attending a musical written and produced by the consummate Selena Luna named The Unauthorized Christina Aguilera Story.
Held at the amazingly eclectic Art VallARTa location at Pilates 213, the intimate theater where the presentation took place is known as Moonlight, and it was the perfect venue for this up close and personal production.
Selena Luna, the writer and producer took the stage and welcomed the audience to this journey of experimental theater.
As the large crowd was getting settled in, I took note of the room where we were seated. It is designed with the stage at the bottom level, allowing everyone seated above an unencumbered view of the performance that will unfold in front of them. A city skyline in glorious black and white provided the perfect background to highlight a story that began on 18 December 1980, the date of Christina Aguilera’s birth on Staten Island, New York.
Well known Puerto Vallarta resident, and international headliner, Kevin Anthony II was the storyteller, comfortably seated in a large chair, holding court and casually sipping Grey Goose as he wove the story of Christina’s life into a beautiful kaleidoscope of heartache, tragedy, and ultimate success.
Joining him, center stage, was the amazingly talented Patriz, who won the audience’s heart as Christina. Providing the perfect accompaniment to Kevin and Patriz was a new talent named Ruli Mayorga, who was seated at a small piano, and provided just the right touch to make the show complete. Sound production was handled immaculately by Soundset Records.
The energy between Kevin and Patriz was kinetic, and provided a wonderful chemistry in motion, as Patriz sang song after beautiful song; Kevin brought his own one of a kind humor to the fore, and kept the audience in stitches throughout the hour performance. Patriz sang; Sunday Kind of Love, by Etta James, Genie in a Bottle, by Xtina, and It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World, by James Brown, just to name a few. A lively duet titled Say Something, A Great Big World, was sung by Kevin and Patriz, bringing two voices in unison to a beautiful melodic prominence.
To round out the evening the great Kevin Anthony II accompanied by Ruli Mayorga on the piano, sang the emotionally charged song titled Beautiful, a fitting end to an extraordinary evening of talented musical passion. After the thunderous applause subsided, an audience member asked Kevin “will you be doing this again,” to which Kevin smiled, and coolly replied, “as long as they have Grey Goose, I’m here.”
