Important changes to dog importation rules went into effect on August 1, 2024. If you’re planning a trip back to the United States with your furry friend from Puerto Vallarta (or anywhere from outside the USA), it’s crucial to be aware of these new regulations to avoid any unexpected issues.
To bring your dog into the U.S., they must:
- Be at least six months old.
- Appear healthy upon arrival.
- Have a microchip that’s universally readable.
- Be accompanied by a completed CDC Dog Import Form.
While Mexico isn’t classified as a high-risk rabies country (those rules are different and have even more requirements), these new rules aim to prevent the reintroduction of rabies into the U.S. It’s important to note that these regulations apply to all dogs entering the country, regardless of their point of entry (air, land or sea).
To ensure a smooth journey, be sure to complete the CDC Dog Import Form online before your trip. You can find the form here.
A word of caution: While major airlines have not changed their pet travel policies, some airlines have temporarily stopped shipping pets as cargo. It’s essential to check with your airline before booking your flight.
Remember: These new rules only apply to dogs. Cats entering the U.S. only need to be healthy and don’t require any additional documentation.
By being prepared and understanding these new requirements, you can ensure a stress-free trip for both you and your furry companion.
