[Editor’s note: Opening night for Hedwig is Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025 at 9 p.m. You can purchase tickets here].

As the winter season of The Palm Cabaret’s 25th anniversary begins, audiences can expect an abundance of unique and unforgettable talent. From incredible musicians and captivating entertainers to sensational drag queens, the lineup is truly diverse, featuring the Broadway, Tony Award-winning musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. We had the pleasure of sitting down with the immensely talented lead actor of the production, Jordon Carnegie, to discuss this year’s show.

  • What is the most challenging aspect of playing your character in this show?

The most challenging aspect of playing Hedwig is that it uses up every single human emotion. It’s physically and vocally draining. But the emotional drain is hard. I’m pretty much vacant after a show and it takes me a good day to bounce back.

  • What is your favorite song to perform in the musical, and why?

Honestly…and this seems like a cop out….I love them all. If I HAD to pick one it’d probably be Midnight Radio. It’s such an anthem and a beautiful cathartic moment for the characters but for the audience as well. Looking out at a full house “lifting up their hands” makes me tear up every single time. It’s a song about hope and knowing that we’re all going to be ok.

  • How did you prepare for this role, particularly in terms of singing, dancing, and acting?

I am fortunate to have played the role before 11 years ago and it’s honestly a bit crazy how tattooed this dialogue is in my brain. I’m older and wiser now, so I have approached a lot the events Hedwig has endured through a different lens. I’m a bit crazy with vocal health and keeping myself in check. It’s also a lot of cardio daily to keep my stamina up.

  • In 2024, when Hedwig & the Angry Inch launched in 2024 at The Palm Cabaret, What is the most memorable moment you’ve had on stage during that production?

The most memorable moment from our limited run last season is probably when our drum shield fell over and Yoalli (Yitzak) had to hold it up while our tech guy came to fix it…meanwhile I just improved jokes and bitchy dialogue☺

  • Who is a Broadway performer you admire, and how have they influenced your career?

I have so many Broadway performers whom I adore. Id say the two most influential on me would be Raul Esparza and Alan Cumming. Raul because his voice is unique and full of vibrato like mine and he’s incredibly versatile. Alan also because of his versatility ….and because we kind of look alike 😉

  • Can you share a behind-the-scenes anecdote about a particularly funny or challenging moment during rehearsals?

Last season we rehearsed at on my terrace with tracks with our Director on zoom until he arrived here. So, there were times when it proved difficult to stay in the moment when technology got in our way.

  • What is your favorite line of dialogue in the show, and why does it resonate with you?

I have many but one in particular is “To walk away, you’ve got to leave something behind” I think we’ve all felt this on some level. That a piece of us got left behind or was sacrificed for what we thought was something or someone better. In some cases, it all works out as planned…in others, like Hedwig’s case, it doesn’t.

  • What advice would you give to aspiring Broadway fans that dream of producing a show like yours in a foreign country?

Patience patience PATIENCE! I’m not exactly known as a patient person…but what I’ve discovered is that if it’s something that you truly want and believe in, then do everything you can to make it happen and be patient while all the pieces fall into place.

  • If there was thing you could change about this role or this musical, what would it be?

If I had to change one thing about this show, I’d say writing in at least one moment where Hedwig gets to be off stage to breathe. In all seriousness, I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s exquisitely written.

  • 10.In your own words, what makes this show “the” show to see in 2025?

Hedwig is “the” show to see in 2025 because you simply will not see anything else like it here. It’s a musical, yes. But it’s also a rock concert. It’s also stand-up comedy yet also incredibly poignant and tragic at times. It’s uplifting and empowering and teaches the audience to look within themselves for acceptance without “preaching” to them. We worked incredibly hard to deliver an end product that is a well-produced, visually intense, musically powerful, riveting show. We’re so proud of what we’ve done.

Be sure to reserve your tickets and experience Hedwig and the Angry Inch this season at The Palm Cabaret, with performances every Sunday at 9 PM. Don’t miss the excitement of opening night on January 5, 2025.

As any Broadway enthusiast knows, some performances are worth seeing more than once, and opening night is definitely one of them. Check out Hedwig and the Angry Inch for an unforgettable evening filled with dazzling talent, captivating music, and the magic of live theater.
