Walmart has opened its U.S. online marketplace (Walmart.com) to customers in Mexico, allowing them to purchase hundreds of thousands of products directly from Walmart.com as the retailer expands its cross-border e-commerce business.
The program, announced Thursday via a press release, makes Mexico the first international market where customers can shop Walmart.com’s expanded marketplace assortment. Eligible products include apparel, home goods, electronics and other merchandise previously unavailable through Walmart’s existing Mexican online platforms.
“We’re focused on making it easy for customers to access an expanded assortment of products,” said Manish Joneja, SVP. “This is a milestone in the evolution of how people access Walmart.com’s marketplace assortment around the world, and we’re excited to bring it to Mexico first.”
Orders will be shipped from the United States through the company’s existing fulfillment network and delivered by international shipping carriers. The company said estimated duties, taxes and other fees will be calculated during checkout, allowing customers to see the total cost before completing their purchase.
Walmart said it is offering free shipping on eligible orders of $35 or more for a limited time, although taxes and import duties still apply.
The retailer said the move is part of its strategy to expand access to its online marketplace internationally. Additional countries are expected to be added in the future, although Walmart did not announce a timeline.
Their are more than 10,900 company stores and e-commerce websites in 19 countries and serves approximately 280 million customers each week. Mexico is the company’s largest international market.
