In a press release sent out on July 3, 2024, The Vallarta Diversity Network has expressed its deep concern and astonishment regarding the recent participation of the Puerto Vallarta government delegation in New York Pride, held on June 29, 2024, at the invitation of the Consulate General of Mexico in New York.
The Vallarta Diversity Network is made up of eleven organizations here in Puerto Vallarta. The participation in NYC Pride wasn’t a surprise – OAPV wrote about it in this article back in early June. Representatives from Vallarta Pride were to attend. Here is the release sent to OAPV:
“In response to this situation, a letter has been officially submitted, through the General Directorate of Legal Affairs and the General Directorate of Consular Services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the Consul General of Mexico in New York, Jorge Islas López, as well as a request for transparency to the Transparency Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General of Mexico in New York.
Among those attending New York Pride was councilor Pablo Ruperto Gómez, known for his statements and actions against LGBTIQ + initiatives in Puerto Vallarta. This fact has generated confusion and annoyance in the community, since these people have not shown a serious and constant commitment to the local LGBTIQ+ community, nor have they even actively participated in Puerto Vallarta Pride.
In the letter addressed to Consul General Jorge Islas López, the Vallarta Diversity Network requests detailed information about the selection criteria used to determine the members of this delegation.
In addition, the need for transparency in the use of public resources allocated to this trip has been emphasized, ensuring that they are used appropriately and for the benefit of the community.
The transparency request entered includes:
- Names of the people invited by the Consulate General of Mexico in NY through the municipal government of Puerto Vallarta.
- Transportation expenses, travel expenses, food, lodging and amenities.
- Selection criteria.
- Scope and expected benefits for the LGBTIQ+ population.
- Knowledge of the consulate about activities to support the LGBTIQ+ community by the people from the municipal government of Puerto Vallarta invited to the event.
The Vallarta Diversity Network highlights the importance of public officials demonstrating a genuine and constant commitment to equality and human rights of the LGBTIQ+ community. The presence of individuals who do not reflect these values at international events undermines local efforts and the credibility of community initiatives.
The Network trusts that its concerns will be considered seriously and remains available for any clarification or dialogue that may be desired.”
