Puerto Vallarta’s municipal markets are welcoming summer visitors with an array of local cuisine, handmade crafts and traditional products, offering travelers an opportunity to experience the city’s culture beyond its beaches and resorts.
Operated by the municipal government through the Sub-Directorate of Municipal Markets, the markets are located throughout the city and serve both residents and tourists with fresh foods, regional specialties and locally made goods.
The Río Cuale Market remains one of the city’s most popular attractions. Vendors offer handcrafted souvenirs, clothing, artwork and other locally made products, while a food court on the second floor features a variety of Mexican dishes. The market also provides parking for visitors.
Magdalena Martínez Espinoza, a vendor at the Rio Cuale Market, said the market gives visitors the opportunity to shop directly from local merchants while exploring a wide selection of authentic Puerto Vallarta products.
The Emiliano Zapata Municipal Market offers a more traditional shopping experience, featuring fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared breakfasts, regional cuisine and everyday household goods. The market also hosts guided culinary tours, where visitors shop for fresh ingredients before participating in the preparation of a traditional Mexican meal.
Seafood lovers can visit the 5 de Diciembre Municipal Market, known for its selection of fresh fish and shellfish, along with the produce, meats and specialty items commonly found in traditional Mexican markets.
In the Ixtapa neighborhood, the municipal market serves as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike, offering Mexican snacks, traditional dishes and regional products in a family-friendly setting.
City officials encourage visitors to explore the six municipal markets as part of their summer itinerary, highlighting them as destinations where local traditions, cuisine and commerce come together in the heart of Puerto Vallarta. The six are: Río Cuale, Emiliano Zapata, 5 de Diciembre, Aramara, Ixtapa and Las Palmas.
