Centuries-Old Tradition Lives On

The 2024 Guadalupanas Pilgrimage (Peregrinaciones Guadalupanas) season is in full swing in Puerto Vallarta, bringing together a large number of devotees to the Virgin of Guadalupe and spectators who gather along Juárez Street in the city center.

The pilgrimages began on Saturday, November 30 at 7:45 pm with the tour of the servants of the Guadalupe parish itself and will culminate on Thursday, December 12 with a solemn mass at 8:00 pm and “Las Mañanitas” to the Virgin at midnight. It should be noted that this year there will be 455 pilgrimages, which will set a new record surpassing the 350 of the previous year.

The rest of the days, the days begin at 6:00 am with the morning prayers to the Virgin, followed at 6:30 by the dawn Eucharist; some days there is a morning pilgrimage and the evening pilgrimages begin daily at 5:00 pm, traditionally starting from the corner of 31 de Octubre and Juárez streets, although some start from other points in the city.

As every year, on December 12th the multitudinous “Peregrinación de Los Favorecidos” will take place starting at 11 in the morning and in the afternoon the arrival of the Guadalupe torch is expected, which travels from the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City to the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Puerto Vallarta, being transported by parishioners who run in relays with fervor.

This festival, more than a religious tradition, is a tribute to Puerto Vallarta’s sense of community and devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe, consolidating itself as one of the most significant cultural and spiritual events in the region.

The pilgrimages represent different organizations, associations and companies in Puerto Vallarta and parade accompanied by floats, dancers, live music and fireworks until they reach the main altar of the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Juarez Street in downtown Puerto Vallarta is flanked by street vendors selling Mexican snacks, typical sweets, desserts and religious items.

The Fiestas Guadalupanas in Puerto Vallarta have been declared “Intangible Heritage of the State of Jalisco” thanks to their deep resonance in the collective identity of the community. This is one more of the traditions that are kept alive in Puerto Vallarta and can be enjoyed by anyone who visits the most authentically Mexican destination.
