Mayor-Elect Munguia promises to start a recycling program and address garbage issues

Puerto Vallarta’s Mayor-Elect Luis Ernesto Munguía González, made a return visit to the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood (Zona Romantica) on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, to address the pressing issues facing its residents.

Residents had invited him to visit in May 2024 during his campaign, to walk through their streets and listen to their problems. He went and at that time promised his support. The residents told him then they felt abandoned by the current administration in City Hall. The return meeting took place today at the same point – on the corner of Constitución and 5 de Febrero – in the Romantic Zone, next to the suspension bridge that connects with Isla del Cuale.

The Tribuna reported that the neighbors told him the downtown area has fallen into disrepair, plagued by problems ranging from homelessness and pollution to crumbling infrastructure and even crocodile sightings in the Cuale River.

One of the first things Mayor-Elect Munguia said he wanted his administration to address was the issue of garbarge. He announced they will start the pilot program in Emilliano Zapata neighborhood. The program, “Zero Waste Agenda” modern garbage collection, will include a high-tech recycling plant and eco compost stations.

Munguía, acknowledging the severity of the situation, pledged his commitment to addressing these issues. He announced plans to initiate a pilot program for modern garbage collection and recycling, as well as invest in road repairs and improvements to the neighborhood’s infrastructure.

The mayor-elect also expressed his intention to boost the local economy, attract more tourists to the historic center, and create a safer, more inclusive environment for residents and visitors alike.

“We have a love for this area, part of this great historic center that gave rise to Puerto Vallarta and we are going to do it justice,” Mayor-Elect Munguia said in the Tribuna article. “We are going to improve that face, to change the face, in terms of cleanliness, attention to spaces and adapting the sidewalks, for our seniors and people with disabilities, with a more inclusive design.”
