Toronto native Derek Carkner is leveraging a unique blend of Canadian non-profit experience and a deep immersion in the Mexican arts scene to anchor his real estate practice at Donner & Associates.
Now a nine-year Puerto Vallarta resident, Carkner has established himself as both a versatile community figure and a real estate agent known for navigating clients through the buying and selling process with candid advice.

Before transitioning to Mexican real estate, Derek spent two decades working in the Canadian non-profit sector. He serves on the advisory board of the Vallarta School for Girls and regularly volunteers for local food banks, river cleanups, animal rescue operations, children’s shelters, and seasonal toy drives.
Beyond his real estate and humanitarian efforts, Derek is a familiar face in the local arts community. As an actor, singer, and pianist, he frequently collaborates with prominent vocalists across Puerto Vallarta’s stages.
Carkner’s background in the arts is backed by formal credentials. His nearly 20-year involvement with the Toronto International Film Festival inspired him to pursue a master’s degree in cinema studies at the University of Toronto. Over the years, he has also appeared as an actor in several film productions, and he still spends his free time catching movies at local theaters.
As part of his commitment to professional excellence, Derek is a member of AMPI (the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals), where he also serves on the local committee. Additionally, as an international member of NAR (the National Association of Realtors), he belongs to a select group of agents licensed by the state of Jalisco.
