Last weekend, the renowned Colectivo Rompe unveiled their latest mural at the Faro Matamoros, paying homage to the iconic actress Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor not only put Puerto Vallarta on the world map but also left a lasting legacy in the city. This mural, painted by the talented artist and director of Colectivo Rompe, Sharo García, represents both Taylor’s cultural impact and the importance of art in the urban renewal of Puerto Vallarta.
The Faro Matamoros, which had been abandoned and practically destroyed, was rescued thanks to the efforts of Colectivo Rompe, led by Sharo García, and local authorities. The site, previously used as a public restroom and filled with trash, had lost its public lighting due to vandalism. However, through a joint effort, this emblematic space, which offers an impressive view of the city, was restored.
The Impact of Art on the Urban Landscape
The creation of this mural not only revitalizes a historical space but also highlights the power of art to transform the urban landscape. Public art not only beautifies the city but also fosters a sense of community and belonging among its residents. This mural is the penultimate project of Colectivo Rompe for this year. Soon, a call for artists will be issued to paint a mural on the wall below the stairs leading up to the Matamoros Street Lighthouse, continuing the artistic transformation of the area.
Elizabeth Taylor and Her Legacy in Puerto Vallarta
Elizabeth Taylor lived intermittently in Puerto Vallarta from 1963 to 1989, during which time she made numerous donations to the municipality and helped establish the iconic tourist destination that it is today. Her love for the city and her contributions to the local community have left an indelible mark.
Inauguration Ceremony
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the interim mayor of Puerto Vallarta, Francisco José Martínez Gil, and the Consul General of Mexico in New York, Jorge Islas López. Both expressed that the collaboration to rescue historical spaces through art is a great source of pride. They congratulated Colectivo Rompe and Sharo García for their ongoing efforts to change and improve the urban landscape of Puerto Vallarta.
This event took place as part of the activities celebrating Puerto Vallarta’s anniversary as a municipality and city, highlighting the importance of preserving and revitalizing historical spaces through art and community involvement.
The restoration of the Faro Matamoros and the unveiling of the Elizabeth Taylor mural are clear examples of the power of art to inspire, renew, and transform. Congratulations to Colectivo Rompe for rescuing emblematic spaces of the city and transforming them through art. Thanks to these efforts, Puerto Vallarta not only preserves its rich history but also looks forward to a future filled with creativity and beauty.
