A member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel said the recent violence in Puerto Vallarta and elsewhere in Mexico has ended and described it as a targeted attack against the government following the killing of the group’s leader.

Watch the interview on TikTok, here on the CTV TikTok page.

In an interview aired by Canadian television network CTV, reporter Avery Haines spoke with a man identified as a low-level member of the cartel, known as CJNG. The interview was conducted in a neighborhood outside Puerto Vallarta that the reporter said is controlled by the cartel. The man asked not to meet in public.

The cartel member said the first day of violence in Puerto Vallarta and other parts of Mexico was carried out by low-level operatives. He described the incidents as an orchestrated attack against the government, carried out under strict orders, and said tourists were not to be targeted.

He said the violence was retribution for the killing of the cartel’s leader, known as “El Mencho.” According to the interview, he stated that the goal was to send a message to the government and not to harm civilians or damage tourism.

When asked whether more violence would follow, the man said the situation is now calm and described the area as safe.

He also said that the slain leader’s son-in-law has taken over as the new head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, adding that he had been second in command before being chosen to lead.
