Maripoza’s Butterfly Experience, a new interactive exhibit at Puerto Magico, offers visitors a chance to explore a butterfly sanctuary, botanical garden, and performance venue.
Maripoza, which recently opened, is a massive space that features a butterfly sanctuary, botanical garden, show stage, cafeteria, and mezzanine bar overlooking the tropical setting.
The Tour
Oscar Soto explained that guided tours start every hour from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and offer a mix of Mexican culture, performing arts, and butterfly education. Visitors begin in a lobby and then move to the Monarch Room for a video on the historical significance of butterflies in Mexican cultures, which includes how the indigenous Pre-Hispanic people of Mexico (The Aztec, Mayan, and Zapotec )related to the butterfly in their particular time on earth.
Next, guests enter a stunning botanical garden, there is tropical foliage, and greenery in every direction; the grand stage is at the center of the room, where a performance called “The Princess Monarch” takes place. This presentation is a favorite among children, featuring a performer dressed as a butterfly, Oscar told us.
“We are very happy Maripozas offer’s a performance that has a direct appeal to children, especially the Princess Monarch presentation. It’s an immersive experience for the whole family,” Oscar explained.
A video on the butterfly life cycle follows, and there’s a chance to grab refreshments at the on-site cafeteria. Before entering the main attraction, the butterfly sanctuary, visitors wash their hands to protect the butterflies.
The Sanctuary
The sanctuary houses 17 different butterfly species, with around 1,400 butterflies fluttering around at any given time. A biologist is on hand to answer questions about these beautiful creatures.
I observed several vibrantly glorious Monarchs enjoying time in their natural habitat. I also learned that the Monarch’s favorite source of nutrition is the milkweed, once present in abundance in the US, but now thanks to pesticides, much diminished. The butterfly also enjoys fruit, which is provided for them in the sanctuary, along with milkweed and nectar.
Evening Entertainment
Maripoza’s will present a variety of musical performances. Upcoming shows include a Queen tribute concert, Long Live Mexico! With Brenda Gavino, highlighting traditional Mexican Mariachi Music will be held and Monarch Jazz Quartet featuring Delilah Beaucoup will be presented.
“We are excited for each guest, as the sound system, lighting, and the aesthetics of the massive space will all contribute to the overall enhancement of each and every show that will be presented at Maripozas,” Oscar said.
A Welcoming Space
Maripoza’s Butterfly Experience offers a climate-controlled environment where visitors of all ages can enjoy nature, music, and education.
“We look forward to sharing Maripoza’s diverse experiences with everyone, it’s a space where all are welcome, and can come and enjoy nature and music in a friendly, climate controlled environment.” Visit soon to discover Maripoza’s Butterfly Experience, and much more, right in the heart of Puerto Magico.
