Live music, mariachi, fireworks and civic parades will take place along the Malecón and at Plaza de Armas from Sept. 13–16
Puerto Vallarta will commemorate the 216th anniversary of the beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence with four days of free public events in the heart of the city.
The program, scheduled from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Wednesday, Sept. 16, will combine civic ceremonies with live music, traditional dance, mariachi, parades and fireworks at Plaza de Armas and along the Malecón.
Beyond the official program, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues throughout the Romantic Zone are also preparing special events for Independence Day. Visitors can expect themed dinners, live entertainment, parties and other celebrations on Sept. 15 and 16. Out & About PV will publish a separate guide with options for celebrating at some of the neighborhood’s popular venues.
The official celebrations will begin Sunday at 8 a.m. with a civic ceremony at Plaza de Armas commemorating the Battle of Chapultepec. The historic battle took place on Sept. 13, 1847, during the Mexican-American War and is remembered in Mexico for the defense of Chapultepec Castle by military cadets known as the Niños Héroes.
On Monday, Sept. 14, the traditional Charro Parade will begin at 10 a.m. along the Malecón, bringing one of Jalisco’s most recognizable cultural traditions to Puerto Vallarta’s waterfront.
The main Independence Day celebration will take place Tuesday, Sept. 15. The day will begin with a formal City Council session at 8 a.m. at Plaza de Armas.
Entertainment on the main stage will begin at 6:30 p.m. with DJ Zuar, accompanied by batucada percussion and pre-Hispanic dance. The evening’s lineup will also include Ballet Folclórico Cuauhtémoc, Mariachi Internacional Real de América and Grupo Caché.
At 11 p.m., the traditional Grito de Independencia will be delivered from City Hall. The ceremony recalls Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s call to arms in 1810, which marked the beginning of Mexico’s struggle for independence from Spain.
A fireworks show will follow at 11:30 p.m., with Banda Vallejo closing the evening beginning at midnight.
The final day of activities will begin Wednesday, Sept. 16, with a civic ceremony at 8 a.m. in Plaza de Armas. The Civic-Military Parade will start at 9 a.m. and travel along the Malecón.
All activities in the official municipal program are free and open to locals and visitors.
