Seven individuals representing various components of the LGBTQ+ community are candidates for positions on the Puerto Vallarta City Council. It’s one of the largest slate of diversity candidates in history.
Those candidates include:
Dulce María Flores, representing Strength and Heart for Mexico (PAN, PRI and PRD).
Cynthia Hernandez, Hagamos (Let’s Do It)
Marisela Marín, Hagamos (Let’s Do It)
Luis Tello, Citizen Movement (MC)
Carlos Plascencia, Citizen Movement (MC)
Luis Escoto, National Regeneration Movement (Morena)
Jessica Adriana Rangel, Labor Party (PT)
Missing from the slate are candidates from parties such as the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico and Future.
Some of the names are probably familiar to those in the LGBTQ+ community, as Carlos Plascencia and Luis Tello have been very active in the community.
“Candidates like Dulce María Flores, Marisela Marín, Cynthia Hernandez, Luis Tello, Carlos Plascencia, Luis Escoto and Jessica Adriana Rangel are breaking barriers and paving the way for more representative politics,” said a press release from the Movement for Equality in Mexico (MOVii). MOVii applauds sexual diversity in Vallarta payrolls, but points out omissions*
MOVii went on to add that “this omission is a reminder that there is still much work to do to achieve equitable representation of all sectors of society” and called on all parties to adopt a more inclusive vision, one that not only reflects social justice but also enriches political institutions with sexual and gender diversity.
