Passenger traffic at Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico airports fell in March, with Puerto Vallarta posting the steepest decline among the company’s major tourist destinations, according to preliminary figures released this week by the company in a press release.

The airport group reported an overall 8.9% decrease in total passengers across its network compared with March 2025, but the drop was significantly more pronounced in Puerto Vallarta, where traffic fell 24.4% year over year.

The decline was driven largely by a sharp reduction in international arrivals, a key segment for the coastal destination. International passenger traffic to Puerto Vallarta dropped 32.1% in March, falling from 531,400 travelers in 2025 to 360,800 this year. Domestic traffic also declined, though more modestly, down 6.8% over the same period.

In total, Puerto Vallarta handled 576,600 passengers in March, compared with 762,900 a year earlier — a loss of more than 186,000 fliers in a single month.

The figures reflect a broader slowdown across Mexico’s Pacific airport network, though few destinations saw declines as steep as Puerto Vallarta. By comparison, Los Cabos reported a 6.9% decrease and Guadalajara saw a 2.3% dip.

For the first quarter of 2026, Puerto Vallarta traffic is down 10% overall, with international passenger numbers falling 13.1%, underscoring a sustained softening in demand.

The company also reported a reduction in available airline seats of 4.5% and a drop in load factors — a measure of how full flights are — from 81.5% to 75.5%, suggesting weaker booking levels across the network.

Despite the downturn, airlines continue to add routes to Puerto Vallarta, including new service to San Diego and St. Louis on Southwest Airlines, signaling long-term confidence in the destination even as short-term traffic declines.

Puerto Vallarta, one of Mexico’s most important beach tourism markets, relies heavily on international visitors, particularly from the United States and Canada. The latest figures point to potential headwinds for the local tourism economy as the spring season progresses.
