Lady Zen
It’s a Lady Zen Xmas
The lady with the big voice offers Holiday Season Greetings to all! Lady Zen is a force to be reckoned with, to be adored and admired. She has a natural deep-ranged voice which goes down low in the blues but soars upward for a gospel finish. She is well-versed due to her intense interest in music of various fields. In Puerto Vallarta no less, we are walking in a “Winter Wonderland”: “In the meadow we can build a snowman and pretend that he’s a circus clown.” The 200+ artists who have covered this tune, from Frank Sinatra to Johnny Mathis and Michael Bublé, the melody resounds yearly for anyone dreaming of snow. The near capacity [COVID-19 restricted] bounced along throwing ‘snowballs’ in the air.
“The Christmas Song” from way back in 1945 followed. Lady Zen referred to the fine version by Ella Fitzgerald resulting in a bluesy slow swing. One could almost see the roaring flames in the fireplace. Lady Zen, aka Alzenira Quezada possesses a singular voice, distinctive in her tones but also exciting as she projects jazz or blues vibes. She takes this handful of classic Holiday songs, breathes them in and then formulates her individual arrangement working with the remarkable Mark Hartman on piano. He employs his instrument in ways never before heard but appreciated for its extravagant delivery.
“Mary, Did You Know”…Is Lord of all creation? That your baby boy would one day rule the nations?” This is an older tune which is coming into favor for its intense visions. She remarked that she never liked the composition “Greensleeves” until she herd a new version with lyrics closer to her own feelings. She has mastered this old standard dating back to the 1500’s.
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” sums up a wish for the Holidays for everyone. She delivered this gentle masterpiece with grace and love which shone from her. Whizzing through the snow, attendees were boarded onto a “Sleigh Ride” and she led the way with her jingling bells and rich sounds through the night air. Borrowing from Kenny Loggins, his “Celebrate Me Home” has evolved into a Holiday song and Lady Zen grasp it and sent out fond, longing feelings so very well. Mark added his personal special treatment of those ivories.
Starting slowly and simply, she gradually worked up the song “O Holy Night” through her vocals. Her performance rivaled any singer on Earth, dating back to the great Mahalia Jackson. All gathered here heard a stellar rendition not to be forgotten.
Lady Zen slid into the beautiful “Silent Night”, then turned it into a sing-a-long. The audience responded with choruses of the famous lyrics and endearing melody. Her communal event made this evening complete and uplifting in Holiday Spirits.
