Escape to Europe at Trovasi Cafe

A quiet refuge, where time seems to slow down, has recently opened in Puerto Vallarta. The scent of freshly brewed coffee fills the air, mingling with the aroma of pastries. White tablecloths adorn the tables, which have been set with cloth napkins.  The small bistro and outdoor courtyard is inviting and intimate, with a beautiful mural spanning the entire main wall of the dining room.

Trovasi Cafe is a European type cafe specializing in high quality coffees & espresso drinks, breakfast & lunch items including juices, fresh baked goods, biscotti, quiches, sweet & savory toasts, gourmet sandwiches and desserts. It has opened in the Los Mercardos Plaza, Aquiles Serdán 265, Zona Romántica, Emiliano Zapata, 48380. It’s open 7:30 am – 2:30 pm, Monday – Saturday.

Greg Moesser, a previous Dressage trainer and retired Realtor from Los Angeles, California, had been searching for a “cozy neighborhood cafe with beautiful interiors and an open courtyard space.” As a morning person, he loves to get out and enjoy a nice French Press coffee or macchiato espresso.

“I would always seek out beautiful spaces to have my coffee, such as the coffeehouses of Vienna, or the hotels de Crillon, or the Daniele, but I couldn’t find anything like that here in Puerto Vallarta,” Greg explained.

So Greg and his husband Dwight took the plunge and created (albeit on a much smaller scale) a dream that has been in the works for a long time

It’s not their first business venture in Puerto Vallarta. They opened Villa Vallardin, located in the Gaviotas/Versalles area, just over four years ago. The fully staffed villa boasts more than 6,000 square feet, accommodating up to 16 guests, with six bedrooms and six baths and two swimming pools.

The cafe’s name is a version of word “Trovar” that means “to find” in Italian. When you walk into the Trovasi Cafe you’ll more than likely be greeted by Greg, who is probably one of the most gregarious people you will ever meet.

“It’s all about the food quality, the experience and the service” Greg explained, and the Trovasi staff is no exception.

When you visit, hopefully you’ll have the opportunity to be waited on by Jesus, who was a private chef on a luxury yacht for a year before joining the Trovasi team. There is also Josafat, a highly regarded professional barista who prepares wonderful coffees & drinks. Juan is the head chef with years of restaurant experience and is assisted by Israel, who recently returned from a year in Spain cooking in European restaurants. Angie is the café’s administrator and she is always ready to serve you with a wonderful smile.

“All of our drinks are made in house with no artificial flavors, no preservatives and no high fructose syrup,” Greg explained. “The coffee beans come from an award winning plantation in the state of Nayarit, the biscotti, cookies and muffins are all baked in-house, the breads are from an artisanal bakery, and a local European chef makes the quiches, with an all French butter crust.”

He went on to explain that the small menu is still in its experimental stages, while the staff tests and gauges the reaction by customers. So far, Jose, the head waiter, said that the customer favorites have been the prosciutto & burrata toast, caviar with avocado eggs; the madeira cake with fresh berries and the tiramisu.

Greg said the average cost for two people enjoying a coffee and speciality item would only run around $200 pesos per person, unless you order the caviar. They are also planning to add wine and champagne to the menu, so Mimosas and Bellinis will be coming soon.

While you are there, be sure to ask your server about joining the Friends of Trovasi Club. It’s free, and offers a 20% discount on all food and drink (except caviar).
