Puerto Vallarta will be home to the first-ever Mexico location of the popular U.S. franchise, Hamburger Mary’s.

A three-story building on Basilio Badillo 283, the former Roberto’s Superb Seafood, (next to Nacho Daddy’s and the popular Pancake House) will be home to the new restaurant and bar, which is being opened by long-time visitors and residents, Cory Kemp and Susan McKenna. The group has secured franchise rights across Mexico and has plans for expansion throughout the country.

“We are super excited to bring this fun drag and dining experience to Mexico and first to the place I call home, Puerto Vallarta” said Susan McKenna, CEO & Co-Founder of KM Management Solutions, the property management company behind the project. “We are also looking forward to helping with the economic recovery here, bringing jobs and being a part of the local business and LGBTQ communities. Offering our space to nonprofits at no charge to help them with fundraising is an important part of my personal passion, and a primary piece of the Mary Mission,” McKenna said.

A quiet opening of the HM Test Kitchen is planned for mid-March — where guests can have a sneak peek at the decor, styled with “a full dose of glam and a side of kitsch” says McKenna. The Puerto Vallarta location is considered “Mary’s winter home,” with designs and artwork inspired by a place “where Mary winters” after long days and snowy/freezing nights in Denver, CO, her home base (where’s there’s also a very successful Hamburger Mary’s location).

While the HM Test Kitchen is open, guests can drop in, say hello to General Manager, Julio Meza, take a sneak peak at Mary’s newly renovated “winter home” and sample the tasty creations that have an American style with a Puerto Vallarta flair. No shows or the famous “Dining with the Divas” Hamburger Mary’s brunches will be on the schedule until the club officially opens.

A public opening is now being planned for Friday, April 9, 2021 (watch social media as these dates could change).

Hamburger Mary’s, which has 16 locations in 10 states in the US, opened in San Francisco 1972. Not long after another opened in Hawaii, and the rest is history. The company franchised in the late ‘90s, and, as drag has become more mainstream, has been a primary source of supplying queens to the hit TV series, RuPaul’s Drag Race.

A trip to Hamburger Mary’s is about the experience and the piles of fun guests will have. With a full service bar to enjoy tantalizing martinis and margaritas, like the “Margarita Mary” and “Pretty in Pink.” The entertainment includes shows with the most famous drag queens in Puerto Vallarta (and Mexico), and of course international guest stars from the US and beyond. Other programming includes:

Mon-Fri from 10-4 is co-working space (with high-speed internet, charging stations at every booth and discounts on coffee, tea and soft drinks all day long!)

Scareoake Mondays

Tuesday – La Mas Draga

Wednesday Drag Queen Bingo

Thursday Various programs

Weekend Drag Shows, Drag brunches – “Dining with the Divas,” dancing (including Sunday, “What’s the T” dance, and drinks!

The first floor of the space will be the primary dining / restaurant space, with live TV feeds (and guest visits) from the shows, which will begin on the second floor. The second floor is also outfitted with an outdoor terrace allowing for plenty of fresh sea air to circulate throughout the space.

The third floor has an open terrace with comfy seating and smoking permitted. After the drag shows, the building is quickly converted into a dance club. The space will also be available for private parties and special events, with seating for up to 200 people.

On the menu, you’ll find the popular Queen Mary Burger, Love Me Tenders (chicken fingers), salads, and sandwiches, along with some newly created specialty items, such as the “Malecon Burger,” a surf-n-turf hamburger with coconut shrimp and a special sweet-n-spicy mango sauce.

Hamburger Mary’s Puerto Vallarta will be open seven days a week.

“Since I came out in the 90’s, Hamburger Mary’s has always been a safe and fun space for me to visit, just like Puerto Vallarta. I can’t wait to introduce this brand to Mexico and to add another community space in Romantica, for everyone to eat, drink and be MARY,” McKenna said.
