Five important questions (and answers!) with Joseph Fenity

Emily West is an American music artist, signed to Capitol Records, and competed on the American TV show America’s Got Talent. She is performing in three shows at Coco Cabaret – Friday, Nov. 29; Monday, Dec. 2 and Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024. You can purchase tickets to see her here. Writer Joseph Fenity squeezed in some time and asked her what brings her to Puerto Vallarta.

JOSEPH FENITY:

We’re so excited to have you here in Puerto Vallarta! Why PV? How’d we get so lucky?

EMILY WEST:

My dear Palm Springs friends invited me to Puerto Vallarta last spring and I just fell in love with the city’s beauty, culture, and of course, the beach. I knew that I wanted to come back to Puerto Vallarta to do some shows, so here I am spending my Thanksgiving break with my friends and performing at the new Coco Cabaret Theater.

JF:

How important is your LGBTQ audience to you? Any idea of how your loyal gay following originated?

EW:

I have a huge gay following ever since I appeared on NBC’s America’s Got Talent about 10 years ago. I believe it’s because we both enjoy the same musical artists like Judy Garland, Bette Midler, Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, and Annie Lennox. These are the artists that I showcase in my cover songs and I present the songs with an old Hollywood attire along with my powerful ballad voice.

JF: What can we expect to see at your three-night Coco Cabaret residency?

EW: I plan to honor the icons of the past and present with a mixture of songs from classics to contemporaries to holiday songs to ballads. Expect an authentic performance from me and my accompanist Derek Carkner — a resident of Puerto Vallarta.

JF: What do you plan to do in Puerto Vallarta in between performances??

EW: My wonderful friends have a beautiful home in Puerto Vallarta, so whenever I visit, they spoil me rotten. We walk down to the pier and shop. We just went to Daiquiri Dick’s on the Beach and I ordered my favorite – mahi-mahi ceviche. I’ll spend many dinners at my favorite local restaurant, Martini en Fuego, enjoying their delicious seafood that you can only get in Puerto Vallarta.

During the daytime, I spend hours laying around the pool in a beautiful white robe doused with sunscreen practicing my music.

I walk around this romantic island where Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor fell in love on the cobblestone and try not to overspend with all the beautiful artwork from the local Puerto Vallarta artists.

I find the local charm so wonderful. I held a hairless cat while getting Palo Santo at a local store called Chakrana.

JF: What do you think makes Mexico such a special place? What do you love most about it?

EW: I love the people, the sunsets, the art, and the gorgeous ocean waters. There is an unspoken language of love and acceptance here. The locals are so kind that you don’t even need to know the language here, but I’m doing my best to learn!
