The local theater group Dionisio, known for staging productions that explore LGBTQ+ themes throughout its history, has recently been selected to represent Puerto Vallarta at two major performing arts events at the national and state levels: the Teatro a Una Sola Voz monologue festival with its production 2012: El Mundo se va a Acabar (2012: The World Is Going to End) and the Jalisco State Theater Showcase with its drag comedy Amigas Desgraciadas (Unfortunate Friends).

“We’ve had a couple of years in which we’ve reaped the rewards of our hard work. Last year, my monologue 2012 was recognized as one of the three best productions at the Interior Theater Festival, and I received the award for Best Actor. This year, we were selected to participate in the Teatro a Una Sola Voz tour, a traveling festival that visits seven cities in southeastern and central Mexico. Being chosen for this circuit is the culmination of the project,” said Juan Pablo Hernández, writer and performer of 2012: The World Is Going to End, directed by Juan Carlos Ramírez.

In 2012: The World Is Going to End, Hernández revisits moments from his childhood and adolescence in San Vicente, Bahía de Banderas, as he grapples with fears surrounding the end of the world. The biodrama, which also explores the author’s experiences growing up gay, serves as a metaphor for loss and the life cycles that shape our personal histories.

Teatro a Una Sola Voz is a one-of-a-kind monologue festival created to promote and develop solo performance theater in Mexico. Since its founding in 2005, the festival has been presented in venues across the country, offering diverse programming in both themes and theatrical styles. It is organized by Mexico’s Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature through the National Theater Coordination Office. The Centro-Sureste circuit, which 2012 will join, includes Mexico City, Xalapa, Cancún, Mérida, Puebla, Campeche and Pachuca.

“It is undoubtedly one of the most important theater festivals in Mexico,” said Ramírez, director of 2012. “We’ll spend about two weeks on the road, bringing the theater being created in Puerto Vallarta to new audiences and stages. We’re extremely proud and excited.”

Meanwhile, the drag comedy Unfortunate Friends recently earned awards for Best Costume Design, Best Actor (César Bravo) and Best Director (Juan Carlos Ramírez) at the 2026 Interior Theater Festival, held in late May in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco. The production’s success secured its selection for the Jalisco State Theater Showcase, scheduled for August.

This is not the first time Dionisio has received recognition beyond the local level. Over its 14-year history, the company has earned numerous awards and distinctions, including:
