Arte VallARTa Museo announces the opening of VERNÁCULO/VERNACULAR on May 24, 2024, a captivating exhibition by renowned LGBTQIA+ artist Erik Rivera.
Marking Rivera’s first showcase in Puerto Vallarta, this international exhibition concludes its journey after captivating audiences in Mexico City and Malaga, Spain.
On Friday, May 24, Arte VallARTa Museo, will present its second international art exhibition of the season. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. and (open to the public) you can come and meet artist Erik Rivera. Accompanying him to the opening will be Jaime Cobián, one of Mexico’s staunchest LGBTQIA+ activists.
Through an array of paintings and drawings, primarily created during the COVID-19 pandemic, Rivera delves into the heart of Mexican identity and culture, offering a unique perspective shaped by his queer lens. His subjects are not merely portrayed; they are invited into a broader social dialogue, their voices amplified through their own vernacular.
Rivera masterfully blends elements of childish innocence with historical, intellectual, social, religious, and political references, reinterpreting them alongside contemporary, emotional, global, and sexually diverse influences.
This fusion of past and present, personal and universal, constructs a vision of Mexico where all individuals are embraced and accepted within a shared tapestry of language and perception.
In Rivera’s own words, “I am convinced that we are what our childhoods have made us. Mexicans grow up developing a powerful and vast magical-religious-spiritual-cultural imagination. Very mixed and diverse, it is not necessarily aligned to any dogma, and that, unlike this, evolves into something that is constantly exposed to various references of a timeless and borderless origin of a globalized world. Coupled with personal and emotional experiences resulting in a unique blend that makes up a particular identity, it includes a belief system with interpretations uniquely its own.”
VERNÁCULO/VERNACULAR exhibition opens on May 24, coinciding with Vallarta Pride Week, and will remain on display until July 28. This groundbreaking exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in Rivera’s profound artistic expression, challenging perceptions and fostering a deeper understanding of Mexicanidad through a queer lens.
