Inauguration of Stairs Culminates Years of Planning and Work
The once dilapidated and dangerous stairway leading down from Highway 200 to Playa de Los Muertos in the Amapas neighborhood has been transformed into a stunning mural, thanks to a collaborative effort by the community.
The $1.4 million pesos project (located on Calle Abedule), spearheaded by the Amapas Neighborhood Association (ANA), was celebrated with a symbolic inauguration on Thursday, November 15, 2024.
“We’re incredibly proud of what our community has achieved,” said Gary Green, president of the ANA. “This project is a testament to the power of community and the positive impact we can have on our neighborhood.”
Local artist Danyol León (Tamale) brought his vision to life on the massive canvas, incorporating iconic Puerto Vallarta landmarks into a vibrant mural. Over 40 volunteers contributed their time and effort to help paint the masterpiece, using 60 liters of paint and other supplies donated by Benjamin Moore (Benjamin Moore donated all the brushes and tape used in the project, and gave a “significant” discount on the paint).
Each landing of the stairs features a unique QR code that allows visitors to learn more about the artist’s inspiration and the significance of the depicted landmarks. This innovative approach blends art with technology, creating a truly interactive experience.
“The Amapas Stairs are a perfect Instagram spot,” said Will Murdoch, an ANA board member.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the project has revitalized the neighborhood and enhanced the quality of life for both residents and visitors. The ANA has a long history of community involvement, having initiated various projects such as sidewalk construction, cleaning initiatives, and lighting installations.
“We’re grateful to everyone who contributed to this project,” Green said. “By working together, we’ve created a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy.”
As the Amapas Stairs continue to captivate visitors and inspire local artists, it’s clear that this community-driven project has left a significant mark on Puerto Vallarta.
