Puerto Vallarta will host the 2026 Downhill Puerto Vallarta competition May 1–2, drawing elite riders from around the world and an estimated 20,000 spectators, the Government of Jalisco, through the Ministry of Tourism, has announced.

Downhill cycling is an extreme mountain biking (MTB) discipline focused on descending technical, steep, and rocky terrain in the shortest time possible. Characterized by high speeds, massive jumps, and both natural and artificial obstacles, it is often considered the “Formula 1” of MTB.

The streets of the historic center of Puerto Vallarta will be the perfect stage for this spectacular sport due to its steep slopes, which begin high in the Sierra Madre foothills surrounding the city and culminate at the iconic boardwalk, or malecón.

The competition will bring together the mountain biking elite on an urban circuit that blends speed and acrobatics, featuring a track that winds through narrow alleys, staircases, and landmark locations throughout the destination.

This high-velocity course was designed by world-class specialists including Ollie Wilkins, Christian Fairclough, and Liam Mason, all of whom bring extensive experience from high-level international events.

With an estimated attendance of 20,000 spectators, the event will showcase the best of downhill and freestyle in one of Mexico’s premier destinations. This edition returns with increased international participation, as competitors arrive from various countries to headline one of the year’s most anticipated gatherings.

Confirmed participants include prominent figures such as Rémy Métailler, Kilian Bron, Jhony Salido, and Bienvenido Aguado. Activities will begin on May 1 with practice sessions and course reconnaissance, while the main competition and the Best Trick showcase will take place on May 2.

The event enjoys broad international media coverage through partnerships with networks such as ESPN, Fox, Disney+, National Geographic, Televisa, and TV Azteca. These alliances, along with support from global brands, significantly amplify the event’s reach and visibility.

Michelle Fridman Hirsch, Secretary of Tourism for Jalisco, emphasized that these gatherings are part of a comprehensive strategy to attract visitors, boost the economy, and project the destination globally. She noted that 2026 will be a pivotal year, featuring a robust agenda that includes dozens of international activities across various sectors.

Fridman added that these initiatives generate direct benefits by stimulating industries such as hospitality, gastronomy, and transportation, while simultaneously strengthening the destination’s image and consolidating its presence in international markets.

Ernesto Rivas Butcher, President of Sabino Producciones, noted that the return of this competition marks a milestone. The format integrates two distinct disciplines: a speed trial from the highlands down to the boardwalk and an acrobatic exhibition on ramps, both featuring independent awards.

He indicated that this is an invitation-only event bringing together 40 competitors from over ten countries, reflecting its global relevance and drawing power. Rivas highlighted that the competition involves the local community, transforms the city into a sporting arena, and generates a positive impact on tourism activity.

With this edition, Puerto Vallarta reinforces its reputation as a host for high-level experiences, while Jalisco solidifies its strategy of using major events as a driver for development, international promotion, and the strengthening of domestic tourism.
