Puerto Vallarta Celebrates 215 Years of Independence

Puerto Vallarta will join cities across Mexico this weekend in commemorating the nation’s 215th Independence anniversary with parades, music and the traditional Grito de Independencia.

While Sept. 16 is the official holiday, the festivities begin the night before. As Marcia Blondin wrote in the Vallarta Mirror, “Mexico’s liveliest celebration [is] on the 16th, Independence Day. That’s not actually true. There is a parade on the 16th, and it’s a revered National holiday, but the real fun starts on the night before.”

On Sept. 15, crowds will gather downtown as streets close to traffic and celebrations build toward 11 p.m., when Puerto Vallarta’s mayor will reenact Father Miguel Hidalgo’s 1810 call to rise up against Spanish rule. The original words of the priest’s speech were never recorded, but the closing shouts of “¡Viva México!” and “¡Viva Puerto Vallarta!” echo from plazas across the country each year.

The Independence Day holiday is one of Mexico’s most cherished traditions, honoring the heroes who fought for freedom and the rich culture that continues to define the nation. From colorful parades to family gatherings, it is a time for both remembrance and revelry.

As José María Morelos y Pavón once declared: “To die is nothing when one dies for one’s homeland.”

Below is the schedule of activities for Puerto Vallarta’s Independence Day celebration. Please check the appropriate social media to make sure the information is up-to-date, as things may change.
