The Movement for Equality in Mexico (Movii)request that LGBTIQ+ candidacies for proportional representation in Jalisco be in the first five positions of the multi-member lists.
“Leaving LGBTIQ+ candidacies in position 10 as proposed by the Jalisco Congress can give rise to what is known as testimonial candidacies, in which people of sexual diversity are included in the lists, but without a real opportunity to be elected”, explained Víctor Espíndola, coordinator of MOVii.
Instead, he noted, securing a spot in the top five does offer a real chance of competition, and should LGBTIQ+ people make it to Congress, it will allow these voices to be truly heard and have a real impact in building public politics.
The Constitutional and Electoral Points Commission of the Jalisco Congress will discuss an electoral reform initiative with the objective of legislating affirmative actions for people from the LGBTIQ+ population, for which the groups are asking for a real commitment.
The fight of the organizations and activists, which began in 2021 due to the omission of the Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute of Jalisco to issue criteria on the so-called rainbow quotas and a pending sentence of the state Electoral Tribunal, was resumed by legislation jalisciense.
In their petition, different groups and personalities of LGBTIQ+ activism demanded that access to political-electoral rights of all people of diversity be respected in a full, real and without simulations.
They asked the Jalisco Congress to approve a reform that contains the highest standard of human rights and does not represent a hoax, by guaranteeing in the first five positions of the proportional representation lists the possibility for LGBTIQ+ people to reach a decision-making space. decisions.
