We Are Puerto Vallarta’s First-Ever Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

On April 1, 2026, something long understood by Puerto Vallarta’s entertainment community was finally made official: Kim Kuzma was recognized for her contributions and awarded the very first We Are Puerto Vallarta Lifetime Achievement Award.

For those who have laughed, cried and sung along with her over the past two decades, the honor feels less like a surprise and more like a standing ovation that’s been building for 20-plus years.

Kim’s journey to Vallarta wasn’t part of some master plan.

It was more like a spontaneous leap that turned into a lifelong love affair.

She still vividly remembers her first moments on a Vallarta stage.

“I remember my very first time at The Palm Cabaret. I was absolutely terrified as the room was full of gay men and I was nervous to interrupt their chatter filling the room and start singing,” she says.

But something magical happened that night.

“The audience was very welcoming, cheering, and I finally relaxed,” she recalls.

“The audience that night absolutely helped make that happen.”

That connection — instant, electric and deeply human — would become the foundation of a relationship between performer and community that has only grown stronger with time.

Back then, Vallarta wasn’t even on her radar.

She was building a successful career in Vancouver and preparing for Europe when life intervened.

“It was year 2000, so I wasn’t even thinking of Mexico,” she says.

But years later, during a challenging personal chapter, a friend nudged her toward revisiting the idea.

Within days, she was on a plane.

“It was literally him calling me up on a Tuesday, asking ‘What are you doing Thursday?’ and we left!”

That impulsive trip changed everything.

What kept bringing her back wasn’t just the performances.

It was the feeling.

“I always felt like I was returning ‘home,’” she says.

And anyone who’s ever arrived in Vallarta knows that moment she describes so perfectly: “Once we hit the Malecon, my face would light up with the biggest grin, absolutely elated that I was back! Giddy like a schoolgirl.”

Over the years, Kim witnessed Vallarta transform into one of the world’s premier LGBTQ+ destinations.

From a handful of performers competing for audiences to today’s vibrant, high-caliber scene, she’s seen it all.

“There are some fierce performers here!” she laughs.

Yet through all the evolution — dancers, visuals, bigger productions — one thing hasn’t changed: the hustle.

“Entertainers still need to flyer and promote to everyone on the beach. That is vocally tiring. I remember it well.”

Yes, Kim Kuzma once worked the beach in a bikini promoting her shows — and she hasn’t forgotten it.

In fact, her marketing tactics were memorable.

“Sometimes I’d threaten the men that I’d take my bikini off next time I saw them if they didn’t come to my show. How’s that for marketing? Lol.”

Eventually, the constant travel took its toll.

After years of living out of suitcases — “lugging up to eight suitcases back and forth” — Kim made a decision that would shape her next chapter.

“I wanted to create some roots for myself.”

Transitioning into real estate while continuing to perform allowed her to build stability without losing her connection to the stage.

Today, performing in Vallarta feels different — but in the best way.

“There’s less stress involved now,” she says, grateful for loyal audiences who still show up after all these years, alongside new faces discovering her for the first time.

Her popular dinner shows continue to reflect what she does best: blending humor, vulnerability and authenticity into something that feels deeply personal.

That authenticity is no accident.

“Whatever I’m going through always makes its way into my performances,” she explains.

Whether she’s riding a wave of joy or navigating heartbreak, it all shows up on stage — often wrapped in humor.

“Or perhaps if feeling more vulnerable, it’s entwined with humor and sarcasm so you can’t see just how devastated I may be. Good thing I’ve never experienced that and it’s all been unicorns, princes and rainbows. Lol.”

But beyond the laughs, what defines Kim’s legacy is connection.

One story still stands out among the many.

After making a special effort to ensure a woman with mobility challenges had a great seat for her birthday, Kim later met the woman’s daughter — by chance.

“She shared how much it meant to her mom. By the time she finished, I was in tears.”

For Kim, those are the moments that matter most.

“That I made someone feel ‘seen’ is important to me.”

It’s this emotional generosity — on and off stage — that has endeared her to Vallarta for more than two decades.

And Vallarta, in return, has given her something just as meaningful.

“This community is one of the most generous I’ve ever seen,” she says.

“It always comes down to the people. Plain and simple.”

That sense of belonging is perhaps why her shows now feel less like performances and more like reunions.

“Most definitely for family,” she says.

“Or meeting new family.”

So what does it mean to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award in a place that feels like home?

“I’m tremendously honored,” she says.

“It really does mean something to me.”

And it should.

This recognition isn’t just about longevity. It’s about impact.

It’s about two decades of fundraising, storytelling, laughter and showing up as her authentic self, night after night.

Of course, Kim being Kim, she keeps it grounded with humor.

When asked about being called a “legend,” she quips, “Old as hell! Lol!” before adding, “I am so blessed that people still want to come and listen.”

Looking back, there was a moment — years ago — when she knew this life was meant for her.

Standing in Gringo Gulch, taking in the view, she stopped mid-run and said out loud: “I am going to live here one day.”

That certainty, that clarity — it led her exactly where she was meant to be.

And today, her Vallarta is rich with meaning.

“My Vallarta is a town that has given me so many memories, friends that I will have for life. I’ve created a successful life for myself on my own. It’s given me much to be proud of.”

As she puts it so simply — and so beautifully: “Thank you, Puerto Vallarta!”

After more than 20 years, countless performances and now a historic award, one thing is clear: Puerto Vallarta didn’t just give Kim Kuzma a stage.

It gave her a home.
