A new gay bar has opened for the bear community, making it the third bear-oriented business to open on Basilio Badillo in Puerto Vallarta.
Serving up regular cocktails and beers, as well as some signature drinks like tequila with pickles, gin and celery, along with the use of rosemary syrup, and lots of mezcal.
Toñito Castañeda and Ron Thomas have opened the bar, Diablitos Cantina, on Oct. 23, 2023. It’s located just down the street from Studs Bear and Leather Bar and right next door to MistrBear.
“Diablitos comes from Mexican culture, as death, a Diablo is part of our roots,” Castañeda explained while describing the bar’s name. “Mexicans – we see the “bad” things as something normal, just part of our life, we make fun of drama situations.”
While both Toñito and Ron are part of Puerto Vallarta’s growing and fun bear community, they said the bar is a welcoming place for everyone.
“Diablitos is a Mexican cantina,” Castañeda said. “It’s not formal and everyone is welcome. We are part of the bear community but we make everyone feel comfortable. Diabltos is gonna be your second home.¨
Diablitos is surprisingly large once you enter. What was a former laundry, the two owners combined and rented three separate spaces to make the bar a welcoming space, and includes an outdoor patio.
“Diablitos is still changing,” Castañeda said. “We haven’t finished renovations of the whole place yet, and new surprises are coming.”
He said the patio will be a chill spot for those who want some privacy to chat and have drinks.
Castañeda moved to Puerto Vallarta 11 years ago, and hails rom Tampico, Tamaulipas. Thomas is from Oregon in the United States and also owns the Sea Monkey Restaurant.
“This was a dream,” Castañeda said. “Now it is real, and it is time to share our dream with everyone.”
