Alfredo Soria, who served as the director of the Municipal Council for AIDS Prevention (COMUSIDA Vallarta) since late October 2025, announced the end of his tenure via social media following instructions from the Puerto Vallarta government. Addressing the community, activists, and health institutions, Soria shared that his removal was communicated via a phone call from the City Council’s Human Resources department on Tuesday, December 31, 2025.

“As of today, I do not have clarity regarding the reason for this decision,” Soria stated. “Instead, there have only been speculations on social media about the motives. Given these assumptions, I firmly hope that the decision is not a response to political interests and that we are not facing a government that ignores the consequences of its decisions, especially concerning vulnerable populations.”

Commitment to Activism

Soria emphasized that political or partisan conflicts should never harm social causes. He reiterated his lifelong commitment to HIV prevention and AIDS eradication, noting that he will continue his work from the front lines of activism. He also expressed a willingness to collaborate with the municipality and the incoming director to ensure the city’s health objectives are met.

“In the coming days, together with the collectives and institutions dedicated to HIV prevention, we will be delivering a petition to the Mayor and the Councilor of the Health Commission,” Soria added. “This will outline the actions, recommendations, obligations, and commitments that must be met by COMUSIDA to ensure the institution fulfills its objectives aligned with international goals.”

Alfredo Soria led the COMUSIDA AIDS Day commemoration parade on December 1, 2025.

Speculation and Political Context

While Soria thanked his team and the community for their support, the local Spanish-language outlet Vallarta Hoy has speculated on the political motivations behind the shift. Reports suggest the dismissal may be a tactical move by City Council members to form a front against Councilor Melissa Madero and her allies.

Vallarta Hoy also indicated that Josefina Peña, formerly of the Executive Secretariat of the Protection of Children and Adolescents (SIPINNA), may be appointed as the new director. As of now, the City Council has issued no official statement regarding a permanent replacement.
