As the sun rose over Banderas Bay on Christmas morning, hundreds of children formed a long line along the sand, waiting patiently for a holiday tradition that has become a fixture of the season in Puerto Vallarta.
The annual toy giveaway on the beach celebrated its 25th year on Thursday, December 25, 2025, drawing an estimated 250 to 300 children to the beachfront in front of the Blue Chairs Resort, a longtime supporter and host of the event.
The event began at 9 a.m., with toys spread across the beach and hanging from nearby beach palapas. Children got to pick toys that ranged from bicycles, Barbies, sporting goods, musical instruments and more.
Visitors from the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Norway arrived as early as 8 a.m. carrying bags and boxes filled with donated toys.
Santa Claus, dressed for the warm coastal weather in beach attire, greeted children as they made their way through the toy-filled area.
The tradition began in 2000, started by Nancy Plantz, who organized the event for more than two decades alongside her partner, Marg Heeney. This year, organizer Ken Askew was asked to help oversee the event while Plantz recovers from health issues.
“Nancy asked me to take over this year while she focuses on her health,” Askew said. “What hasn’t changed is the generosity. People come from all over the world, and the joy on the kids’ faces makes it all worth it.”
In addition to toys brought directly to the beach, organizers collected donations ahead of time to purchase gifts for donors unable to attend in person.
