Rehabilitation work began Monday on Avenida México, from Argentina Street to 31 de Octubre Street, in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood, as part of ongoing efforts to modernize and improve the urban image of the Historic Center.

The project includes the installation of new street lighting, sidewalks and street furniture, as well as major infrastructure upgrades to drainage and drinking water lines. One lane will remain open to vehicular traffic while construction is underway, and space for pedestrians will be expanded.

For the latest northern expansion project, federal funds from ZOFEMAT will support enhancements to boardwalks I and II, including new urban equipment, lighting, planters, and an automated irrigation system.

Originally built in 1936, the Malecón has been expanded and updated since that time, and it underwent a major renovation in 2011. Since then it has fallen in disrepair and current city officials have vowed to repair the area.

Juan Pablo Martínez, manager of the City and Historic Center, said the project has the backing of most property owners and tenants, who support the city’s efforts to enhance local development.

He noted that Puerto Vallarta was recently named the favorite small city in Mexico and the second favorite in the world by Condé Nast Traveler, a recognition expected to attract more tourism to the destination.

Martínez urged residents to disregard rumors about the work and said the project will be carried out transparently and efficiently.

In addition to replacing water and drainage systems, crews will install underground utilities such as electricity and cable — a long-requested improvement from residents.

Materials used in the nearby boardwalk, including porphyry stone, washed seal and Wixárika black stone prints, will be standardized. New bollards will also be added to create a more harmonious look throughout the area.

City officials said the rehabilitation aligns with the “Government of Good” initiative to strengthen Puerto Vallarta’s economic and tourism potential and boost its competitiveness as a national and international destination.
