Puerto Vallarta will strengthen its ties with Canada this winter as Porter Airlines launches three new direct flights from Toronto, Ottawa, and Hamilton, increasing the city’s international connectivity and underscoring the importance of Canadian tourism in the region.
The new routes, announced by the Government of Jalisco and the Ministry of Tourism, aim to consolidate Puerto Vallarta International Airport as the second-most frequented Mexican airport by Canadian travelers. Operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), the airport will now connect with 17 Canadian cities, for a total of 37 international and 13 domestic destinations served by 18 airlines.
In 2024, more than 490,000 Canadian travelers arrived in Jalisco by air, up 2% from the previous year and 57% higher than in 2022. Currently, one in three international visitors to Puerto Vallarta comes from Canada.
“We are very pleased with the growth that the Canadian market is experiencing with Jalisco,” said Michelle Fridman Hirsch, Jalisco’s Secretary of Tourism. “We know that at this juncture, we must demonstrate our closeness and affinity—and above all, make it clear that we in Jalisco welcome Canadians with open arms.”
Fridman Hirsch said Canadian visitors are increasingly exploring Jalisco’s many offerings, including Guadalajara, Chapala, Puerto Vallarta, Costalegre, and the Pueblos Mágicos. “We recognize and celebrate the arrival of these routes with Porter, such an important airline in Canada,” she said.
The new Hamilton-Puerto Vallarta route marks a key addition to Puerto Vallarta’s network, further connecting Canadian travelers to Mexico’s Pacific coast. Beginning in November 2025, Porter will operate the new flights using 132-seat Embraer 195-E2 aircraft.
Founded 19 years ago and based in Toronto, Porter Airlines is Canada’s third-largest carrier. The airline currently serves more than 40 destinations and transports 5.5 million passengers annually. Porter flights are known for offering enhanced service in economy class, including no middle seats.
“Canadian travelers’ interest in Puerto Vallarta continues to grow steadily,” said Andrew Pierce, Porter Airlines vice president of network planning and reporting. “Now passengers can enjoy the award-winning hospitality that stands out in every aspect of Porter flights.”
GAP officials emphasized the strategic importance of enhancing routes between Canada and Puerto Vallarta. Forty-five percent of the airport’s international flights now originate in Canada.
“For GAP, investing in greater airport connectivity is a priority,” said Omar Gildardo Torres Grajeda, Puerto Vallarta Airport manager. “Porter Airlines places its trust in Puerto Vallarta and in this terminal, which provides the infrastructure and service needed to welcome visitors from Canada and around the world.”
International passengers make up 63% of traffic at Puerto Vallarta International Airport. Through May 2025, more than 2 million international travelers passed through the airport.
GAP reiterated its commitment to improving passenger experience and airport infrastructure, noting that Porter’s new routes represent a significant step toward strengthening air links with Canada.
