The Vallarta Gay+ Community Center has launched a new, free English language program aimed at empowering local residents and newcomers with valuable communication skills.
The course, which began March 27, has already enrolled 16 students. The diverse group includes seven men, six women, and one trans individual, ranging in age from 26 to 45. According to the center, many participants are recent arrivals from other Latin American countries seeking to build confidence and opportunities in Puerto Vallarta.
Taught by Zacarías “Zack” de la Cerda, the program features a 12-month curriculum designed to blend grammar fundamentals with practical, real-world application. Classes meet weekly for two hours, and the structure allows new students to join progressively. Future plans include hands-on sessions like roleplaying conversations relevant to local hospitality settings.
Students discovered the program through various community channels, including word-of-mouth referrals, social media outreach, and flyers posted at the center, highlighting strong community interest.
Seeking Student Sponsors
The initial six months of this pilot program received sponsorship from Matt Karimi and David Smith.
“Learning English creates access to employment, financial independence, and a better quality of life,” said Matt Karimi, reflecting on the program’s potential impact.
As the center looks to the future success of the English classes, continued community backing is welcomed. The operational cost to support a student’s participation is estimated at $500 MXN (approximately $25 USD) per month, or $6,000 MXN (approximately $300 USD) for a full year.
Those interested in learning more about how to support the ongoing program can contact Matt Karimi at the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center.
