The Commission for Gender Equality and Human Development of the Puerto Vallarta City Council held a regular session on Wednesday, August 3, 2023, to discuss and analyze the initiative proposal and call for the Cabildo de la Diversidad.
The Cabildo de la Diversida (diversity cabinet) will help address problems and needs of the LGBTQI community. Among the attendees at the session were Adriana García López, Héctor Ramírez Betancourt, Carlos De Niz, Jet de la Isla, Alvaro Martínez, Luis Manuel Ochoa Tello, Christian Lara, and Víctor Espíndola.
Héctor Ramírez Betancourt, stressed the importance of not excluding other groups that have historically been discriminated against, such as people with disabilities, indigenous people or people of African descent.
Jet de la Isla emphasized the need to establish frequent and fluid communication with all the people involved and with community-based organizations to achieve greater inclusion and representativeness.
On behalf of the Movement for Equality in Mexico, MOVii, Víctor Espíndola offered a series of observations. He suggested changing the name of “Cabildo Diverso” to “Cabildo de la Diversidad” to promote a more inclusive language, to invoke in the initiative the municipal regulation of citizen participation, to offer in the background details about the previous session of the commission, to expand the age range of the participants and indicate the binding nature or not of the initiatives that are going to be approved in the Cabildo de Diversidad.
The session was characterized as a space for dialogue and proposals in favor of diversity.
Also present was trustee Juan Carlos Hérnandez and councilors Pablo Ruperto Gómez Andrade, and Maria Elena Curiel. Each of them contributed their perspective and commitment to advance inclusion and respect for diversity, reiterating the need to implement effective and timely measures.
The councilor Lupita Guerrero, president of this Equality Commission, promised to follow up on the recommendations and observations of the initiative and the call so that it can be taken to the plenary session of the Puerto Vallarta Cabildo.
