Following a definitive court injunction allowing Uber to operate in all of Mexico’s airports, the platform’s drivers in Puerto Vallarta have announced they will hold off on operating at the Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport for the time being.
The reason for this preventative decision is that the National Guard (Guardia Nacional), the public security institution under the Secretariat of National Defense, has not been formally notified of the judicial ruling. Local drivers fear being detained or having their vehicles impounded due to this notification lag.
The injunction was granted on Monday, October 27, 2025, by District Judge Adriana Judith Uribe Vidal, ending a years-long debate over whether Uber and its drivers should operate in federally regulated zones. Taxi Operators had staunchly opposed the measure, citing unfair competition while Uber drivers have consistently argued for the user’s right to choose their preferred transportation method.
In a press release, Uber expressed confidence that the injunction would lead to a final resolution, especially considering upcoming international events.
“Uber trusts that this injunction will be upheld in a final resolution, taking into account the current context of the country’s airports: the World Cup will be held in Mexico next year, and it is of paramount importance that we show our best face to the millions of tourists we will receive during the planet’s most important sporting event.”
Uber officially launched its services in Puerto Vallarta on June 27, 2017. However, formal regulation, including the registration of driver-partners and vehicles following an agreement with the Jalisco Secretariat of Transportation, wasn’t established until January 13, 2020.
Currently, Uber drivers in the city are permitted to drop off passengers in the airport’s departures area. However, they are prohibited from picking up passengers from the terminal. As a result, travelers frequently walk outside the terminal area to the pedestrian bridge over Highway 200 to access the platform’s service.
