STUDS Bear and Leather Bar Marks Three Years of Growth and Community

In a city known for its LGBTQ+ nightlife, STUDS Bear and Leather Bar has carved out a unique identity over the past three years.

Opened by Mike Owens in 2022, the bar has grown into a global name in queer nightlife and community-building. Now celebrating its third anniversary, the bar is expanding in more ways than one — from new leadership and digital media ventures to an expanded retail presence and rooftop experience.

A Dream Rethought and Realized

Mike Owens, owner and founder, didn’t set out to open a bar in Mexico. In fact, 7 years ago he was living in Long Beach, California, working in a corporate job and married to his husband of nearly 20 years.

“I was happy and I certainly did not expect to find myself alone at 55 years of age,” Owens said.

After his marriage ended in 2019, Owens visited Puerto Vallarta for the first time — a trip that was meant to last five days. Two weeks later, he was still there.

“I found myself in love with the people, the food, the community and the gay scene that made up Vallarta and Old Town,” he said. Eventually, he retired, became a permanent resident, and decided to pursue a long-held dream of owning a bar.

After initially opening Therapy Bar and STUDS as two separate concepts, Owens merged them into one expanded venue under the STUDS brand. Today, the business employs more than 35 people during high season.

Growing with Intention

STUDS has founding staff members Juan Manuel Lozano, Ricardo Marquez, Carlos Montes with Juan Pedro Arau and Victor Benavidez as co-bar managers. Owens also recently hired Pepe Zendejas as STUDS’ first-ever Director of Operations. Zendejas brings a new level of strategic oversight as STUDS prepares for its next chapter.

Part of that chapter includes STUDS Studios, a new digital initiative. Plans are underway to develop a podcast studio focused on education, interviews with community figures and voices from the bear and leather communities. The venue will also produce adult content available via a paywall on the bar’s website. Both studios will be available for public rental, providing opportunities for local and international creators.

“This gives us a chance to elevate our presence and serve our community beyond just nightlife,” Owens said.

Global Reach, Local Roots

In May the STUDS team participated in Puerto Vallarta Pride, and in June, the team participated in the Mexico City Pride Parade, promoting both the bar and Puerto Vallarta itself. According to Owens, the bar receives messages and visitors from around the world.

“The bar has become known all over the world,” Owens said. “We hear from people who are planning trips to Vallarta just to visit STUDS.”

Back in Puerto Vallarta, STUDS continues to build its footprint. Renovations will soon begin for a rooftop terrace, which is expected to open by Oct. 15, 2025. The third-floor terrace will offer guests a more relaxed outdoor space for conversation and cocktails, complementing the bar’s high-energy lower floors.

Retail Expansion and Online Store Launch

Another major milestone is the growth of The Gear Shop by STUDS, overseen by Owens’ partner and now co-owner, Agustin Ibanez. The store offers a curated mix of custom-made leather harnesses, STUDS-branded t-shirts, jockstraps, gear and more than 14 different brands of poppers. New items, including a STUDS-branded belt buckle and line of shorts, are on the way.

In mid-July, the shop will launch an online storefront at STUDSBarPV.com.mx, offering worldwide shipping.

“Agustin has greatly expanded our store,” Owens said. “We strive to always offer the best prices in town.”

Looking Ahead: Leather Fever and More

In November 2025, STUDS will host Leather Fever, a multi-day event in partnership with Casa Cupula, Sir & Son and MISTR Bear. Scheduled for Nov. 20–23, the weekend will feature pool parties, beach outings, contests including Mr. Leather Vallarta and Mr. Kink Vallarta, a cigar party, and more. Owens sees the event as part of STUDS’ broader role in community engagement and cultural celebration.

Gratitude and the Road Ahead

Owens credits the success of STUDS to the people around him — both in Mexico and abroad.

“Community leaders, business leaders and many friends gave me the confidence to pursue my dream,” he said. “STUDS Bear & Leather Bar has found its place in an amazing community of nationals, Americans, Canadians and other international visitors.”

He also acknowledged the role of his partner in both life and business.

“Everything in life is better sharing it with someone you love,” Owens said of Ibanez. “While we are celebrating three years together, I know the best is yet to come.”
