In the exterior hallway of the Municipal Presidency of Puerto Vallarta, the Movement for Equality in Mexico (MOVii) has erected an emotional Altar of the Dead. This altar is a tribute to the people who have left an indelible mark in the fight for a more inclusive and just world.

The altar, enriched with the aroma of cempasuchil that guides the souls back to us, the candles that symbolize the perpetual light of their memory and the traditional offerings that feed their spirits in this annual reunion, is a manifestation of respect and remembrance.

Among the figures honored at this altar is Michel Castro, a gay and deaf-mute man who was the victim of a hate crime after Vallarta Pride in 2023. Michel is remembered by his mother, Basilia Guizar, for his joy and unwavering energy. of the. “Her memory of him is a call for justice and equality that resonates throughout the community,” she said.

MOVii also pays tribute to Paco Ruiz, a visionary and advocate who opened one of the first safe spaces for the LGBT+ community in Puerto Vallarta in 1989. “His legacy is a constant reminder of the importance of community love and support.” , declared his niece Lily Aceves.

Likewise, Mary Antoinette Beltrán, a tireless ally and friend of the gay community of Puerto Vallarta, has her place on the altar of diversity. Víctor Balam, her son, recalled how teacher Beltrán’s life was a testimony that love and acceptance transcend genders and labels.

The altar also holds the photograph of Jonathan Santos, who was murdered at age 18 in 2020. “Jonathan’s premature departure in Jalisco reminds us of the persistent stigma and discrimination. His memory drives our call for justice and a more egalitarian future,” stressed Ivan Tagle, director of Yaaj, the organization to which Santos belonged.

Or Frida Kahlo, a bisexual artist ahead of her time who captured the complexity of identity and human nature in her works, and Chavela Vargas, a spokesperson for overflowing passions who challenged stereotypes and became a powerful voice for the lesbian community, celebrating love in all its forms.

Víctor Espíndola, MOVii coordinator, shared his reflections on the altar, saying: “This altar is not just a tribute, it is a commitment to continue his legacy and fight for a world where diversity is celebrated and equality prevails. “Every figure honored here reminds us of the importance of keeping the memory alive and continuing to work together toward a more inclusive future.”

The altar will be on display until November 6, inviting everyone to reflect on the importance of remembering and honoring those who have contributed to the cause of equality and diversity in Puerto Vallarta.
