This nesting season, the government of Puerto Vallarta invites residents and visitors to help protect the area’s sea turtles. With a few simple actions, you can make a huge difference in the survival of this endangered species.
The sea turtle nesting season in Puerto Vallarta typically runs from June to December, with peak hatching season occurring between August and November. Each year, thousands of female turtles, primarily the Olive Ridley species, return to the beaches of Banderas Bay to lay their eggs. Conservation efforts in the area are highly successful, with an average of over 150,000 hatchlings released annually.
What you can do:
- Keep your distance. Never touch a nesting sea turtle.
- Turn off your lights. Avoid using flashlights or camera flashes, as they can disorient the turtles.
- Clear the path. Make sure their journey to the sea is unobstructed.
If you see a turtle in a dangerous situation, please report it immediately to the authorities. You can call 911 or 322-688-236.
